Got home about the same time my wife and 6 year old got home from school. I was debating on what to do, go hunting or run and meet Mike and fish for a couple hours. My decision was made quick when Ashley asked if I went hunting could she go!!!
Hunbting it was. Got her dresses and loaded a back pack with plenty of snacks, a coloring book and crayons. Met my dad with a small blind and we headed for the woods. Got to the ridge which is a easy 100 yard walk to the area we would hunt.
Throwed the blind up and got set........I called once and........................... .............................. .............................. .................Daddy I got to peeemoSmile ---------------------------Ok honey! opened the blind door and let her go! Daddy.........I need a wipeemoDoh honey I don't have oneemoScratch Thats OK Daddy.
Back in the blind...........I start calling a few minuets later and next thing I know, One starts rattling off but stops mid strideemoDoh Ashley was right up against the blind and as I called she moved a little and hit the blind. I sure wasn't expecting one to come in that quick and be that close! We didn't move for a few minuets hoping he would come on it wasn' ment to be. I called again and nothing. I figured the hunt was over and it was inly 6:05.
We set, colored, ate, drank and she peeed 3 more times (this time inside the blind)! We were about to go and I hear something scratching behind us (the area we walked in )and the direction I did not expect one to come in from!
I turn and look and there is a bird. My first though was I wanted Ashley tp at least see a Turkey in the woods (since this is her first hunt). I raise her up and let her see what I first thought was a henemoDoh I asked her if she saw it and she said "yes, shoot it Daddy". I set her back down and watch this big bird ease down off the logging road and I still didn't see a beardemoGeezer I hear........"SHOOT IT DADDY".......no Ashley it's a hen...............Shoot it Daddy!.....No I can't and it was at that time it raised "his" head and had about a 6 inch beard and I didn't have a shotemoBawl He disappeared and finnally reamerged but was t far to shoot.
I should of listened to her in the first place. At first glance I thought it was a TOM/ JAKE, it was a big bird and had a readish head but I didn't see the beard and I never take a chance on field checking an animal or bird. I wasn't certain and didn't take the open shot at 20 yards!!!!!! STUPID IN A WAY cause after thinking back, I was pretty certain it was aTom but with a daughter in tow and tring to cover all bases I was overly cautious. I did look down at her after she said shoot it Daddy and she had done just as her Paw paw had instructered to do when we got the blind from him..........cover your ears if your Dddy is abot to shoot. Indeed she had her hands over her ears yet her Daddy didn't do his partemoEnforce All in all it was a great trip but I sure wish I would of pulled the trigger.
When we got home all she could tell her mom was Daddy should of shot and we would of been eating some good Turkey!! By the way she did have to reitterate the fact that it's been a long time since we have had any good Turkey!
Great time spent in the woods with my little girl!!!!
