View Full Version : Wisconsin Bill Protects Retrieval Of Hunting Dogs
MADISON, WI—Wisconsin Assembly Bill 663 (AB 663), sponsored by Wisconsin Republican Assemblyman Mark Pettis, would allow hunters to cross onto private property to retrieve a wayward hunting dog. The bill would establish a set of rules that a hunter must follow to retrieve a dog, including an attempt to contact local law enforcement before going onto private land. Hunters would be required to be unarmed and upon collecting the dog, would be required to immediately leave the property.
This bill has a good ideabehind it, but I feel that it is flawed. Rather than forcing a hunter to disarm, which could lead to an unsafe situation (if he is hunting alone and forced to disarm that could mean leaving a gun unattended on the ground), he should be forced to unload his firearm(s). Otherwise it is a great plan that is entirely based on common sense. My state already has a similar rule for retrieving game you shot that runs onto private propertey from state land.
