Accessible blinds open outdoors
Minnesota is known for its tremendous outdoor recreational opportunities. Since 1972, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has been updating its facilities and programs to meet state and federal accessibility standards, opening the outdoors to people with disabilities.
To make hunting more accessible, people with certain physical disabilities may apply for a permit exempting them from restrictions on using a crossbow or shooting from a motor vehicle. In addition, there are special assisted deer and waterfowl hunts and specialized hunting blinds available to accommodate those with limited mobility.
"We continue to provide opportunities for as many hunters as possible," says Larry Nelson, deputy director of the DNR Division of Fish and Wildlife. "There's been a lot of progress over the years but we can do more."
Waterfowl hunters with disabilities will find accessible blinds at Lac qui Parle, Talcot Lake, Swan Lake and Whitewater wildlife management areas. Deer hunters with disabilities will find a wheelchair accessible blind at Talcot and Roseau River wildlife management areas.
More information on opportunities for disabled hunters is available online at www.dnr.state.mn.us (http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/). For information on specific areas write to the following:
