PIERRE, S.D. - Two weeks into South Dakota's new mountain lion hunting season, a ninth lion has been killed in the Black Hills.
A hunter killed a 1 1/2-year-old female lion Saturday evening about eight miles northwest of Custer, the state Game, Fish and Parks Department said Sunday in a news release.
The hunter was specifically hunting mountain lions with a cow elk call, GF&P officials said.
The hunting season opened Oct. 1 and runs through Dec. 15 or when hunters have taken 25 lions or five breeding-age female lions.
The lion shot Saturday was not of breeding age and won't count toward the female lion quota, the GF&P said.
