Either one is fine to shoot but I would prefer the smaller calibur for a squirrel. You need to remember that a 22 falles into the higher distance category and can riquochete much faster.

If you decide to choose a shotgun and your friends want to try something with a little more manners and alot less kick, see if you can find a 410 somewhere. They are fun for small game and you can still use it for quail, dove and other birds.

I too would recommend a .410 over either for squirrel hunting. Specifically, try to find a Remington 870 with a full choke barrel, and use 3" Magnum shells with 6 shot. That's my prescriptioon for squirrel. I would also suggest a .22 over a .17 , since it is less likely to get knocked off by tree branches (2x+bullet weight), and it does not fragment as badley, so there will be less meat damage. The .17 is for long range shooting- most squirrel encounters will be within 100. Anyhow, go .410- you won't regret it! ;)

I have been doing alot of reading on the .17 cal it is a whole lot faster than the 22 lr .I have just ordered me a Tracker 17 cal will let you how it preforms on the squirls but I have to agree with every one else if your friends are just starting to hunt the.410 would be the one.
