Sort of a newbie to hunting so I am very uninformed. My question is: are all rifles, BP and centerfire, have scope mounting bases drilled to a common dimension, or does one have to specifically choose a base for a particular firearm. I guess likewise for the rings. Do they have to be selected for the base or is it common. I'm speaking of 2 piece bases with screw mount rings.
Any help is much appreciated.

When you purchase a scope base, you purchase one that will fit your reciever shape (or other mounting surface shape), and has its attachment holes set so they fit the length between the drilled and tapped holes on your weapon. The rings you use depend on what they are being mounted on. If you have the groove that is pre-cut on a .22 rimfire, you will most likely use tip off rings. If you are using a Weaver (type) mount, you use weaver (type) rings. Some gun makers require the use of proprietary rings.
If you go to a local gun shop, they will help you to purchase a mount and rings that fit your needs. Generally, mount packages will be marked as to what weapons they fit.
