The Indiana DNR is taking commentary via email or letter regarding a proposed rule change that would allow Pistol Caliber Carbines (.357/.44/.45LC/.454/.480/.500) for use during Centerfire season.

Currently, such calibers are allowed only in "pistols", which includes Encores & Contenders with 14"+ barrels.

Simple review of ballistic tables show that these calibers, even in "rilfes", have trajectories that are substantially similar to, or less than, currently legal Sabot Slugs or muzzleloaders, AND are already being used to those same trajectory limits when fired from TC "handguns".

IDNR proposal.....

1. Clarifies the license requirements for hunting deer in the firearms and muzzleloader seasons to state that a firearms license is required in the firearms season and a muzzleloader license is required to hunt deer with a muzzleloader in the muzzleloader season. The changes also list the youth license and lifetime license that can be used to take deer during these seasons. The other proposed modification would allow rifles with only pistol cartridges to be used when hunting deer during the firearms season. Over the years, the DNR has received many emails and letters from hunters proposing a rule that would allow the use of rifles chambered for pistol cartridges for deer hunting. The language in the attached allows the use of rifles and limits cartridge dimensions to those common to pistol rounds, maintaining the DNR's long-time position of allowing only short to medium range equipment for taking deer. The DNR is proposing this rule modification in order to obtain public comment on this issue.

Public hearings have not yet been scheduled for the other rule proposals that received preliminary adoption by the Natural Resources Commission earlier this year.

Preliminarily adopted rule changes:

Written comments can be sent to:

Or mail comments to:

Comments must be received no later than close of business on October 24.

A copy of the public hearing report will be available at www.IN.gov/nrc (http://www.in.gov/nrc) prior to final consideration by the Natural Resources Commission. The NRC will likely consider these rules for final adoption in November. If approved by the attorney general and governor, the changes will become effective in 2007; the first youth spring turkey hunting season will take place in the spring of 2007.

While this Rule change does not address the other "traditional" (tube-fed, blunt-nose) cartridges that have similar ballistics, it goes a long way toward fixing a glaring (and legally actionable) logical error in Indiana Hunting Regulations.

Please email or Post your support (or objection) to this proposed rule change before the Oct 24 deadline.

Thank you.

That sounds like a good step in keeping with their philosophy of "low range equipment", but still allowing a vast variety of arms afield. It should even give an added selections of action types as well- bolt (M-77, Lee Enfield Conversion, Mauser Conversion), lever, pump(Taurus, Navy Arms Lightnings), Semi Auto (Deerfield Carbine), single shots and all sorts of other fun stuff.

The final disposition Pistol Cartridge Rifle proposal will be decided at the NRC meeting on Monday, March 26 at 6 p.m. (Local Time) at the Garrison Conference Center at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis.

The time for emailing, phone calls and letters has been extended until March 31 - but please submit your comments before the March 26 meeting.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is CRUNCH TIME - the opposition (both the “no rifles in Indiana” faction, and the anti gun/anti-hunting nuts, each for differing “reasons”) is vigorously opposing this.

The general Public identifies Deer Hunting with ALL hunting - and it will set BAD precedent to have a State imply that a particular type or class of firearm is "unsuitable" for hunting.

I am asking each and everyone on here that has an interest in this proposal to contact the NRC with your input, feelings and especially objective data (like ballistics), even if you have already contacted them before.

The proposed deer firearm season rule change language reads:
- The rifle cartridge must:
(A) have a bullet of three hundred fifty-seven thousandths of an inch (.357) diameter or larger;
(B) have a minimum case length of one and sixteen hundredths (1.16) inches; and
(C) have a maximum case length of one and six hundred twenty-five thousandths (1.625) inches.

Please do not email about the .30-30, .35 Rem, .444 or .45-70 or any other cartridge that does not meet the above case length criteria. While I understand and sympathize, they are, for good reason, NOT included in the measure, and talking about them will NOT help this pass.

This is about the FREEDOM to CHOOSE between ballistically equivalent tools, and should be framed as such.

Comments can be e-mailed to either or both:
jkane@nrc.in.gov (jkane@nrc.in.gov) - who gathers the input and categorizes it; and
http://www.in.gov/nrc/contact/

Please do your hunting civic duty and take a few minutes out of your time to make that email.
Thanks.

The DNR passed the resolution and Pistol Caliber Carbines were made legal for the 2007 and subsequent seasons.

FWIW I took 2 does and one buck with my 20" Rossi .357 carbine.

Not one took more than a step after being hit... and I shot the Buck on the run at 110yds.

I really like the .357 out of a Carbine. It's my "go to" gun.
